A head-on collision between a pickup truck and a utility truck on Washington Street in Dedham killed the pickup driver late Friday, Sept. 4.

The crash happened around 11:15 p.m. near 960 Washington Street, according to press releases from the Dedham Police Department and the Norfolk County District Attorney's Office posted Saturday, Sept. 5. Norfolk District Attorney Michael W. Morrissey announced the investigation.

The driver of the pickup truck was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim's identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

Dedham's E-911 Dispatch Center received multiple 911 calls reporting the collision. Callers said one of the vehicles was on fire. Dedham Police, the Dedham Fire Department, Coastal Ambulance and Westwood police and fire personnel all responded.

Crews worked to aid an injured person in one of the vehicles and put out the fire.

Lillian Ojuolape, a Washington Street resident who called 911, told NBC Boston she heard the impact from inside her home. "It really started off with like a bang," Ojuolape said. "… The bang echoed through the entire street."

Video from the scene showed the pickup truck sustained catastrophic damage, NBC Boston reported. Ojuolape told the station she saw the utility truck driver get out of the vehicle but did not see the pickup truck driver. She said speeding is a persistent problem on the street, describing the collision as one of the worst crashes she has seen there.

The Norfolk County District Attorney's Office, Dedham Police detectives and several Massachusetts State Police units are investigating. Those units include the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the Crime Scene Services Section and the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section.

No cause of the crash had been released as of Saturday, Sept. 5. The investigation is active and ongoing.

Washington Street was closed while investigators worked the scene. The town said the road would remain shut until the investigation was complete and the roadway cleared.
