The cause of a fatal head-on crash on Washington Street in Dedham remains undetermined one week after the Sept. 4 collision.

Michael Pitts, 59, of Taunton was identified as the driver killed in the crash, WCVB reported. His pickup truck collided with an Eversource utility truck near 961 Washington Street at about 11:15 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4. One of the vehicles caught fire. Pitts was pronounced dead at the scene.

Norfolk District Attorney Michael W. Morrissey announced the investigation on Saturday, Sept. 5. As of Tuesday, Sept. 8, the DA's office said the crash remains under investigation, with no findings released publicly.

Three specialized Massachusetts State Police units are assisting Dedham Police detectives: the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the Crime Scene Services Section and the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section. The involvement of the commercial vehicle unit reflects the Eversource truck's role in the crash.

An Eversource spokesperson said in a statement that the company is supporting the investigation by local public safety officials and does not have additional information to provide.

Dedham Police and Fire Department personnel responded to the crash along with Coastal Ambulance and Westwood Police and Fire Department crews. Washington Street was closed for hours while investigators worked the scene.

Lillian Ojuolape, who lives near the crash site, told Boston 25 News on Sept. 5 that the collision shook her house. "Around 11:15, we all heard a massive bang," Ojuolape said. "Our house shook … but then we ran outside and we saw the two trucks crashed together and there were small flames that started."

Ojuolape said a police officer who arrived first tried to pull the driver from one of the vehicles but could not because of the flames. She called it one of the worst accidents on the street.

Neighbors have raised concerns about speeding on Washington Street in the aftermath of the crash, according to NBC Boston reporting summarized by Patch.

No charges have been filed.
