Needham families will get their first look at the framework for next year's school spending when the School Committee takes up FY28 budget guidelines Tuesday, Sept. 15.
The committee meets at 6:30 p.m. at the Broadmeadow Elementary School Performance Center, 120 Broad Meadow Road. The session is hybrid; residents can attend in person or join via Zoom. It will be broadcast on the Needham Channel.
Budget guidelines, scheduled for 9 p.m., set the assumptions, priorities and calendar the superintendent uses to build the annual budget request. School Committee Policy #DB requires the committee to adopt guidelines before its first November meeting, according to district budget documents. No draft has been published.
The current FY27 operating budget totals $108.9 million, a 4.18% increase over FY26, serving a projected 5,378 students.
Athletics spending review on agenda
At 7:30 p.m., the committee will conduct an Athletics Sustainability Review. No agenda materials explain the scope of the review or who will present. Budget records offer one clue: the high school athletics line jumped 10.9% in FY27, rising from $898,025 to a committee-approved $996,289. The FY27 budget also included funds to hold athletic fees level for families.
Pollard project nears key votes
The committee will receive a Pollard Middle School project update at 8:15 p.m. The $325.4 million replacement project cleared a major hurdle Aug. 26, when the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) Board approved the schematic design and pledged reimbursement of up to $80.6 million.
Two votes stand between the project and a construction start planned for spring or summer 2028: a Special Town Meeting on Oct. 19 to appropriate funds and a debt exclusion vote on the Nov. 3 ballot.
Select Board Chair Heidi Frail flagged the project's fiscal weight at the board's Aug. 15 goal-setting session, noting the town's share of the debt would rival its entire FY27 operating budget of roughly $260 million. "We've got a lot of really big projects that are already in motion and therefore we'll probably end up pushing a lot of other projects off of the priority list," Frail said at the meeting, as reported by the Needham Observer.
The building is over 65 years old. In an October 2025 blog post, Superintendent Dan Gutekanst described inaccessible classrooms, an outdated HVAC system and a leaky roof facing more than 800 students. The new school would serve 1,335 students in grades 6 through 8, built in two phases on the Harris Avenue site.
Other action items
The committee is also set to vote on a Memorandum of Agreement with the Needham Education Association (NEA) covering Unit D employees at 9:15 p.m. No public details on the contract terms or which employee group Unit D represents were available as of Sept. 11.
A separate vote on a Stephen Palmer Property Transition Memorandum of Agreement is scheduled for 9:05 p.m.
The meeting opens with a performance by the Needham High School Chorale at 6:30 p.m., followed by public comment at 6:35 p.m. The next School Committee meeting is Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 6:30 p.m. at the Broadmeadow Performance Center.
