Needham and Dedham commuter rail riders who pass through Ruggles Station will need a valid ticket in hand before they reach the platform starting Monday, August 3.
The MBTA announced Tuesday, July 21, that it will activate fare gates at Ruggles, requiring all commuter rail passengers to tap or scan their tickets both entering and exiting the station concourse. The change moves the initial ticket check from the platform to the gate, though conductors will still verify zones onboard. Riders can no longer plan to buy tickets after boarding.
Ruggles serves the Needham Line, the Franklin/Foxboro Line (which stops at Dedham Corporate Center and Endicott), and the Providence/Stoughton Line. The station recorded 3,166 daily commuter rail boardings in 2024, according to MBTA data.
What won't work at the gates
The gates will not accept stored-value CharlieCards, monthly LinkPasses, contactless debit or credit cards, or mobile wallet payments by phone or watch. Riders who currently tap a credit card or phone to board will need to switch to an accepted method before August 3.
What will work
Accepted options include mTicket QR codes (held to the scanner for two to three seconds), CharlieCards with a printed zone and date, one-way or monthly CharlieTickets with a printed date and zone, $10 weekend paper tickets with a barcode, on-board paper receipt tickets, and active Department of Defense Common Access Cards. Blind Access CharlieCards and Student M7 passes are also accepted. Riders using other reduced-fare CharlieCards must purchase a separate ticket or pass for their zone.
Children 11 and younger ride free. Parents or guardians traveling with children should alert a staff member, who will open a gate at no charge.
Accessibility and safety
The installation includes wider accessible gates for wheelchairs, scooters, bicycles, strollers, and luggage. In an emergency, all gates open automatically. MBTA staff will be stationed on the concourse whenever the gates are operating.
"The installation of Commuter Rail fare gates at Ruggles is just the next step by the MBTA as we follow through on our commitment to improve fare collection and reinvest back into the system that our riders depend on," MBTA Interim General Manager Phillip Eng said, according to Boston 25 News.
What riders should know
After passing through the gate, riders must still keep their ticket handy to show a conductor onboard for zone verification. At Ruggles, passengers should not proceed to the paid track area until their track is announced, approximately 10 minutes before scheduled departure.
Ruggles is the third commuter rail station to receive fare gates, following North Station in 2022 and South Station in 2025. The rollout is part of the MBTA's broader capital investment plan. Fare vending machines are available at Ruggles for riders who need to purchase tickets before entering.
Needham Line service disruptions
Separately, Needham Line service through Ruggles will be suspended from 11 p.m. Friday, July 24, through Sunday, July 26, for West Roxbury Bridge replacement work. Additional weekend outages are scheduled for August 14–16, September 18–20, October 16–18 and 23–25, November 6–8 and 13–15, and December 4–6.
