Spectrum News NECN will keep its newsroom at the NBCU Boston Media Center on B Street in Needham when the regional cable network relaunches in mid-September, according to a report published Monday, July 21, by NewscastStudio.

The network hired former WCVB reporter Matt Reed as an anchor as it staffs up for the reboot, which will emphasize weather and political coverage across New England. Reed, a Peabody native and two-time regional Edward R. Murrow Award winner, left WCVB on June 30 after eight years at the station.

Reed announced his departure in early June, saying his family would remain in New England. He previously worked at WJAR-TV in Providence before joining WCVB in October 2017.

The relaunch follows Charter Communications' February 11 announcement that it would acquire most of NECN's assets from NBCUniversal. The combined operation was rebranded as Spectrum News NECN. Mike Bair, executive vice president of Spectrum Networks, said in Charter's press release that the deal would allow the company to "grow our operation in New England and expand our viewership to additional markets across the country."

The Needham facility also houses NBC10 Boston, Telemundo station WNEU, and NBC Sports Boston. NECN launched March 2, 1992, and reached 3.7 million homes across New England before Comcast dropped the network from its cable systems on July 1, 2025. Comcast said it cut the channel due to declining viewership and duplicative programming.

Under Charter's ownership, Spectrum News NECN will be available to Spectrum customers in Maine and Massachusetts and to Comcast Xfinity TV subscribers in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont.

No specific relaunch date within September has been announced. The network has not disclosed how many positions it is adding at the Needham studio.
