A free climate sign-holding event takes over Needham Town Common on Wednesday, Aug. 19, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., as Green Needham and Elders Climate Action Massachusetts invite residents to make their voices heard along Great Plain Avenue during the evening rush.

The two nonprofits are calling the gathering a "standout," a format where participants line a sidewalk or roadside holding signs on a shared theme. Organizers will provide signs, though attendees can bring their own climate-themed messages.

The event's purpose, according to a Green Needham blog post published Sunday, Aug. 16, is to raise climate's profile as an issue in the months before the November election. Eileen Mullen, who authored the announcement for Green Needham, described the standout as part of the Needham-based nonprofit's advocacy programming.

No registration is required.

Elders Climate Action Massachusetts is the state chapter of the national Elders Climate Action nonprofit, which organizes older adults around climate policy. Green Needham has put together several environmental events this year, including an electric vehicle showcase at Copley Motorcars in May and a separate "Meet an EV" event with the Town Climate Action Committee.

The standout is open to anyone regardless of age or group membership, and there is no cost to participate.
