State troopers from six states will ramp up patrols on Interstate 95 through Needham and Dedham starting Tuesday, Oct. 13. The three-day crackdown on dangerous driving, dubbed Operation Wicked Safe, runs through Thursday, Oct. 15.
The Massachusetts State Police announced the operation on Thursday, Oct. 8, at the agency's Weston Barracks. Troopers from Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont will run highly visible patrols targeting aggressive driving, excessive speed, distracted driving and impaired driving.
I-95, which doubles as Route 128 through Needham and Dedham, is among the priority roadways state police listed for the operation. Interstates 90, 91, 84, 93 and 395 and Route 146 are also on the list.
"If you choose to drive dangerously, we will find you wherever you are, and you will be held accountable," Colonel Geoffrey Noble, the state police superintendent, said at the Oct. 8 announcement.
Lt. Col. Brendhan Shugrue presented the operation alongside law enforcement partners from New Hampshire and Connecticut. New Hampshire State Police Lt. Brian Viglione called it one of the busiest travel weeks of the year in his state and said troopers would patrol from the Massachusetts line to the northern border.
Major Sean Maher said the agency's Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section, known as the "Truck Team," will dedicate 30 troopers to inspecting large trucks, buses and other commercial vehicles during the three days.
State police said dangerous driving behaviors and crashes peak every October, driven by seasonal tourism, school routines and changing weather and road conditions. The numbers back that up. In October 2025, the agency logged more than 4,000 calls for service related to crashes. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation recorded 38 fatal crashes that month, making it the deadliest month of the year.
A 2025 AAA study cited in the state police announcement found that 96% of drivers admitted to at least one aggressive driving behavior in the previous year. That includes speeding, tailgating and cutting off other vehicles.
No post-operation results date has been announced. Residents can report dangerous driving by calling 911.
