A moped operator without a helmet or license plate fled from a Westwood police traffic stop on Washington Street and crossed into Dedham on Saturday, July 25, according to the Westwood Police Department's weekly log published Monday, August 3 by Westwood Minute.

The log does not indicate whether the rider was apprehended in Dedham or whether Dedham Police were involved.

At 9:03 a.m. that Saturday, a Westwood officer conducting stationary traffic enforcement on Washington Street observed a red and white moped without a registration plate being operated by a person without a helmet. The officer attempted a traffic stop, but the operator accelerated and fled on Washington Street into Dedham. No arrest was listed for this incident in the Westwood log.

The pursuit came one day after a similar stop on the same stretch of road ended differently. On Friday, July 24, at 5:19 p.m., a Westwood officer spotted a red moped without a plate, also operated by a helmetless rider, on Washington Street. That rider also refused to stop, turning onto Clapboardtree Street before police followed him to Meadowbrook Road, where additional cruisers converged at a dead end.

The Friday rider, an 18-year-old Roslindale resident, was arrested and charged with failure to stop for a police officer, operating an unregistered and uninsured motor vehicle, operating without a license, a marked lanes violation, and resisting arrest. Police retained custody of the moped because the rider could not prove ownership.

The two incidents are distinct.

The Friday arrest occurred entirely within Westwood. Only the Saturday pursuit crossed the town line into Dedham. The log, compiled from information provided by Detective Lieutenant Christopher Aylward, covered approximately July 21–27 and included other Westwood incidents during the same period.

Washington Street serves as a main corridor between Westwood and Dedham, and the back-to-back moped stops suggest enforcement activity along that route during the week of July 21.

Dedham Police have not publicly commented on the July 25 pursuit or confirmed whether their officers responded. Residents with information about the incident can contact the Dedham Police Department at 781-326-1212.
