Vivienne Laporte and Cate Goodband each scored Thursday, Sept. 24, as Needham girls soccer shut out Milton 2-0 at Cricket Field.
The Rockets built a 2-0 lead by halftime and held it through the second half. Needham HS Athletics confirmed the final score on X shortly after the game.
The win moves Needham to 4-1 on the season, according to the Boston Herald's Sept. 24 roundup. The Rockets entered the game 2-0 in Bay State Conference play, per MaxPreps, and Milton was listed as a conference matchup. A win there would put Needham at 3-0 in league play.
Laporte, a junior, has been one of the Rockets' most productive scorers all season. She had four goals through Needham's first three games, according to the Needham Channel's Sept. 18 recap, and added a fifth against Milton. Goodband's goal gave Needham a comfortable two-goal cushion before the break.
The Sept. 24 result caps a strong bounce-back stretch for Needham. The Rockets opened the season with three straight wins, beating Brookline 5-0 on Sept. 9, Dover-Sherborn 2-1 on Sept. 11 and Weymouth 6-0 on Sept. 15. A 3-0 loss at Wellesley on Sept. 17 snapped that streak, but the Rockets have responded with the shutout of Milton.
That three-win start was nothing new. The Needham Channel noted the Rockets have opened with at least three consecutive victories for three straight seasons.
Needham Channel's TNC Sports crew was on-site recording the Sept. 24 game. The replay airs Friday, Sept. 25, at 7 p.m. on the Needham Channel.
The Rockets travel to Walpole for a Bay State Conference game on Tuesday, Sept. 29, at 6 p.m.
