Needham High girls soccer twice erased a Braintree lead to salvage a 2-2 draw in a Bay State Conference game Tuesday, Oct. 6, at Cricket Field.

Senior captain Izzy Marino and junior Syd Kalaw each scored for the Rockets, who moved to 6-1-1 on the season. Braintree freshman Savannah Sanon netted both goals for the Wamps, who stand at 3-2-3.

Needham entered the game ranked No. 5 in Division 1 in the MIAA power rankings, according to the Boston Herald. Braintree sat at No. 22.

Sanon opened the scoring in the first half on Braintree's first and only shot of the period. Marino answered early in the second half after Cate Goodband connected with her in front of Braintree goalkeeper Olivia Whelan, leveling the match at 1-1. Sanon struck again to put Braintree ahead 2-1.

With about 19 minutes remaining, Marino collided with Whelan while challenging for the ball. Kalaw pounced, steering the ball into the vacated net from roughly 20 yards out to make it 2-2.

"Being down definitely lit a fire under us," Marino told the Herald after the game. "Every game we go into with the mentality that it is going to be a tough team … we always try to bring the same fire, the same energy."

Senior captain Emery Carr echoed that urgency, telling the Herald the Rockets cannot afford to underestimate any opponent as the season enters its final stretch.

Goodband was a factor in the first half, peppering the Braintree defense with crosses from the right side.

The draw keeps Needham among the top contenders in Division 1. MassLive listed the Rockets among five one-loss teams trailing the leaders in updated MIAA power rankings released Oct. 6, noting Needham was last year's No. 1 seed.

Needham entered the Braintree game at 6-1 after opening the season with three straight wins over Brookline, Dover-Sherborn and Weymouth and losing only once. The Rockets return to Bay State Conference play with a visit to Newton North on Thursday, Oct. 8.
