Needham High School class of 2003 graduate Jared Freid has a second Netflix comedy special streaming.
"The Family Plan," which dropped Sept. 1, is built around a 2018 family beach vacation where Freid's father asked the comedian how much he weighed. That story became a full hour exploring the push-and-pull between millennial children and their boomer parents.
Freid, 41, told Needham Local he considers the special the best work he has ever done. He taped it in 2024 after touring the material in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Europe.
The special leans hard on Needham. In one bit, Freid's mother forces him to pose for a photo with an ever-growing group of people, including the owner of Fann's Tailor Shop. He called the owner "a Needham legend" and "the best tailor in Massachusetts." Freid also laments the loss of Kostas Pizza & Seafood, calling it home to the best pita around.
He wore a Needham Rockets hat during his Monday, Sept. 14 interview with Needham Local reporter Benjamin Fogler, a Needham High graduate studying journalism at Northwestern University.
"I wear the Needham badge proudly," Freid said.
At Needham High, Freid played football and lacrosse and was on the boys swim and dive team. After graduating from Penn State University, he moved to New York, sold life insurance and annuities, then started taking improv classes and signing up for open mics. He has been doing stand-up for 16 years.
His first Netflix special, "37 and Single," came out in 2023. In a Los Angeles Times interview published Sept. 1, Freid explained the title of the new hour, saying the cellphone family plan millennials still share with their boomer parents says something about how weirdly attached the two generations remain.
Beyond the special, Freid published his debut book, "Walking Red Flag," through Simon Element in June. He hosts "The JTrain Podcast" and co-hosts "U Up?" with Betches Media co-founder Jordana Abraham. Betches Media executive produced "The Family Plan."
About six months before his Monday, Sept. 14 interview, Freid posted a YouTube vlog of a visit home, stopping by his childhood house, Eliot School, Needham High and Cafe Fresh Bagel.
Freid is touring with a new hour of material he has been performing for about a year. His next set grew from another parental moment: his father offering him Ozempic at dinner, according to Fox News Digital.
