Needham Public Schools lost more than 8% of its kindergarten enrollment in a single year, a preliminary fall 2026 headcount shows, forcing the district to cut one classroom section.

School officials attribute the decline to fewer young families moving to town, lower birth rates and more parents choosing private kindergarten programs, the Needham Observer first reported, as noted in a Patch AM roundup published Thursday, Sept. 24.

The trend has been building. Official Oct. 1, 2025, enrollment data from Needham Public Schools showed 372 kindergartners across 19 sections, down from 393 the prior October. That 5.3% decline already outpaced the overall district dip, which went from 5,496 students to 5,432 over the same period.

The pace is accelerating.

McKibben Demographic Associates, the district's enrollment consultant, projected 353 kindergartners for fall 2026 in its November 2025 forecast, still spread across 19 sections. An 8%-plus drop from the 372 figure would put the preliminary count at roughly 342 or fewer, meaning the district is now running below even the consultant's projection.

The Needham School Committee's class-size policy caps kindergarten sections at 18 to 22 students. Consolidating one section means the remaining classes will run closer to those upper limits. School Committee Chair Alisa Skatrud and the rest of the committee are expected to review enrollment figures in December, according to the Needham Observer's reporting. That review will shape staffing and planning decisions for the 2027-2028 school year.

Officials said they expect overall enrollment to hold relatively steady as housing built under the MBTA Communities Act comes online. A September 2024 town memo prepared by RKG Associates estimated the base zoning compliance plan would add 55 students to the district. A broader neighborhood housing plan could bring 164.

Whether those new families arrive fast enough to offset the kindergarten slide remains an open question. The state's official enrollment count, taken Oct. 1 each year, will provide the next hard data point.
