Needham's $2.38 million Teen Room lands on the Board of Library Trustees agenda Tuesday, Aug. 11, part of a packed evening that also includes votes on a new volunteer policy and upcoming art exhibits.

Teen Room update
The Teen Room, which held its ribbon-cutting April 16, expanded a cramped 800-square-foot second-floor space into a 4,000-square-foot hub with four zones for socializing, group study, quiet study and crafting. It seats more than 90 teens and includes sound isolation, new HVAC and a laptop study bar with charging stations.
The renovation was approved at the May 2025 Annual Town Meeting after the library documented 70 to 100 teens already using the building daily for group projects and individual study. Programs like the Teen Room Yarn Club, a monthly drop-in stitching group for grades 7–12 run by Young Adult Librarian Erin Bassett, have launched since the space opened.
Library Director Rob MacLean told the Needham Observer on June 30 that the Teen Room was "the first fruits of a four-phased capital plan" and that staff had begun thinking beyond those phases about additional patron needs. The Aug. 11 agenda includes a discussion update on Phase 2 planning, which targets a Children's Department renovation with design funding requested for fiscal year 2027.
Volunteer policy and art exhibits
The trustees will vote on a second draft of a new Volunteer Policy. The first draft was introduced as a discussion item at the board's July 14 meeting. Details of the policy's provisions have not been released publicly.
The Library Art and Exhibits Committee will also present its report and ask the board to approve upcoming exhibitors. The library's art program drew attention in July when it acquired N.C. Wyeth artwork. "The library is free and open to all, and everybody is welcome," MacLean told Needham Local on July 27, when the library announced the acquisition. "Having this high-quality art collection available for everybody to come and enjoy is important to the trustees and the staff here."
Other business
The board will also vote on accepting a list of gifts and review FY2026 Action Plan progress. Standing reports from the McIver Series, Friends of the Library and Library Foundation of Needham round out the evening. The meeting is expected to adjourn around 9 p.m.
