Needham opened two new recreation facilities Wednesday, Sept. 30, with ribbon-cuttings at Claxton Field's softball diamonds and Needham High School's eight new tennis courts.
The ceremonies had been scheduled for June 5 but were canceled after Park and Recreation Commission Chair Christopher Gerstel was arrested that morning on fraud charges, according to Needham Local. The rescheduled event drew town officials and a small crowd to both sites.
Claxton Field: from burn pit to ball fields
The two softball fields at Claxton Field, across from the Needham Recycling and Transfer Station, sit on a former burn-pit site. The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) required additional safety steps before construction could proceed, pushing back a Town Meeting funding vote.
Town Meeting approved a $3.6 million appropriation in May 2024. The fields reopened in August 2025.
Town Manager Katie King pointed to the adjacent walking trail and the fields' larger capacity for organized sports. Select Board Chair Heidi Frail called the finished project "a fabulous community benefit" before cutting the ribbon.
Park and Recreation Commission member Cindy Chaston said the investment filled a gap. "We thought there was a real need for some premier softball fields for the girls, our young women athletes, and we didn't really have that," Chaston said. She noted the Needham Softball 12U Summer Team went undefeated in 2026 as evidence of growing demand.
NHS tennis courts: $466,000 under budget
Across town, the group moved to Needham High School for a second ribbon-cutting at eight new tennis courts. The previous courts, installed in 2006, had deteriorated enough that school tennis teams had to relocate during construction.
The town allocated $3 million for the project after an appropriation vote was pushed from May to October 2024. The final cost came in nearly $466,000 under budget. The courts opened in December 2025 and carry a projected 25-year lifespan.
With eight courts, the high school can now host competitions. Chaston said Park and Recreation's summer tennis programs have become oversubscribed.
One court sustained minor damage after a private tree fell on it. Parks and Forestry Superintendent Tim Carpenter said the court will likely need "a good strong cleaning of the area and at most some touch up paint/sealant." All courts remain playable.
Pickleball cannot be played on the new tennis courts, a point that eased noise concerns from neighbors.
What's next: pickleball and a skatepark
The town is eyeing five pickleball courts along Central Avenue at Claxton Field and a skatepark at the site's old quarry, according to the Needham Observer. The Park and Recreation Commission held its third community meeting on those plans Sept. 24.
Both projects are projected to seek funding at the May 2027 Town Meeting, with construction targeted for fiscal year 2028. Needham Local reported the timeline could shift, given prior delays on the softball fields and tennis courts.
Chaston said the town's taxpayers have been supportive of recreation projects throughout the yearslong process. The next milestone is the May 2027 funding vote.
