Needham's Park and Recreation Commission will vote on new trail signage Monday, Sept. 28. The meeting agenda also covers placing defibrillators, water bubblers and benches across town parks.

The hybrid meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the Rosemary Recreation Complex, 178 Rosemary St. Residents can also join via Zoom.

Conservation specialist Tim Puopoulo is scheduled to present the signage proposal at 7:10 p.m., according to the town's posted agenda. The agenda does not describe which trails or how many signs are involved, but flags the item as requiring a commission vote.

Tim Carpenter, the new superintendent of Parks and Forestry, will also be introduced to the commission.

Starting around 7:50 p.m., commissioners plan a preliminary discussion on where to place automated external defibrillators (AEDs), water bubblers and benches in town parks. No specifics have been released.

Three other discussion items round out the evening: private tennis lessons, lighting for the DeFazio Park parking lot and the ongoing Mills Championship Court pickleball situation. DeFazio Park is home to Warner Field, one of Needham's three 90-foot baseball diamonds.

Pickleball and tennis court access at Mills Field has been a source of friction in town, with players on both sides competing for time. A separate, longer-range project to build five dedicated pickleball courts at Claxton Field along Central Avenue is in design development. Town Meeting is expected to vote on that project in May 2027, as first reported by the Needham Observer.

Monday's meeting will also be one of the first for Karen Peirce, the Thorpe Road resident who was unanimously appointed to the commission on Sept. 8 to fill the seat vacated by former chair Chris Gerstel. Peirce spent 15 years as assistant director of Needham's Park and Rec department before taking a similar role in Newton.

"She's coming with a lot of experience, direct Park and Rec experience," commission Chair Michelle Geddes said at the Sept. 8 appointment meeting, as reported by the Needham Observer.

Director Stacey Mulroy's report, scheduled for 7:30 p.m., will include summer statistics on pool and camp programs.

The commission's next meeting, originally set for Monday, Oct. 12, has been postponed to a date not yet announced.
