The Needham Select Board will spend a Saturday morning hashing out its strategic vision for the next two fiscal years, according to a special meeting agenda posted Aug. 5 on the town's website.

The hybrid session is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at the Public Safety Building Community Room, 88 Chestnut St. Residents can also join via Zoom (Webinar ID: 826 0101 3229, Passcode: 652800).

The agenda has a single item: goal setting.

The board will discuss its vision and goals statements, review FY2027-2028 initiatives and go over stakeholder comments that were collected in advance.

Fiscal backdrop

The meeting comes as the board navigates a tight fiscal landscape. A debt exclusion override vote for the Pollard Middle School project, which the board placed on the November ballot at $325.4 million, looms as the largest single spending question facing the town. Needham has not passed an operational override since 2014, and 65.7% of the town's general fund operating budget goes to school spending.

Board member Bill Dermody flagged the August goal-setting sessions during his April 2026 campaign. "We're going to have to look very closely at our priorities when we have those goal-setting meetings in August," Dermody told the Needham Observer on April 8.

Fellow board member Cathy Dowd, speaking in the same April 8 interview, said the key to avoiding service cuts or another override is attracting new commercial growth.

Who's at the table

The board is chaired by Heidi Frail, with Josh Levy serving as vice chair. Dermody and Dowd won their seats in the April 14 town election. Town Manager Katie King gave the board a goals update at its June 23 regular meeting, according to Needham Channel coverage, signaling that strategic planning work was already underway before the Aug. 15 session.

The meeting is open to the public in person and via Zoom. Public comment is available only during a designated comment period or for items listed as a public hearing; it is not available during other agenda items.

Meeting minutes and outcomes are expected to be available after Aug. 16.
