Needham voters who cast provisional ballots in the Sept. 1 state primary will learn within days whether their votes count.

The Board of Registrars has scheduled two review sessions at Town Hall, 1471 Highland Ave., in the Select Board Chambers. The first is Tuesday, Sept. 1, at 10 a.m. The second is Thursday, Sept. 3, at 10 a.m. Both carry the same two-item agenda: determine whether each provisional voter was eligible, then vote on whether to count that ballot.

The posted agenda for the Sept. 1 session lists provisional ballot review, though polls do not close until 8 p.m. that evening. The Town Clerk's Office has not clarified whether the board will reconvene after polls close or handle only ballots from earlier voting. A separate posting confirms the Sept. 3 session.

The primary ballot includes several contested races. On the Democratic side, Edward J. Markey faces Seth Moulton for U.S. Senate. Jake Auchincloss and Jason Poulos compete for the Fourth Congressional District seat. Seven candidates are running for Norfolk District Attorney, including Jim Barakat, Gregory P. Connor, Adam W. Deitch, Robert Louis Jubinville, Macy Lee, Craig J. MacLellan and Djuna Elizabeth Perkins.

Polling locations for five of Needham's ten precincts changed for this election. Precincts A, B and C moved to Hillside School Building at 28 Glen Gary Rd. Precinct D shifted to the Public Safety Building at 88 Chestnut St. Precinct G moved to Powers Hall at Town Hall. Those changes could contribute to voter confusion and provisional ballot use.

Under Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 54, Section 76C, provisional ballots are sealed separately from regular ballots. If a voter is found to be registered, the ballot is unsealed and counted. If the voter is determined ineligible, the ballot is destroyed without being opened.

Voters who cast provisional ballots can check whether their ballot was counted by calling the state Elections Division at 1-800-462-8683 after Sept. 1. The Town Clerk's Office posted both meeting agendas on Thursday, Aug. 27. No additional review sessions beyond Sept. 3 have been announced. Residents with questions can call 781-455-7500, ext. 71503.
