Needham residents who want to vote in the Sept. 1 Massachusetts primary have until 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22 to register. In-person absentee voting at Town Hall is already available, and the formal early voting window opens Aug. 22.
The deadline applies to new registrations, address changes and party switches. Voters can register online at sec.state.ma.us/OVR until 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 22, by mail postmarked that day, or in person at the Town Clerk's office by 5 p.m., according to guidance Needham Town Clerk Louise Miller published in the League of Women Voters of Needham newsletter on Friday, Aug. 14.
What's on the ballot
The primary covers nominees for U.S. Senate, U.S. House, governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of the commonwealth, treasurer, auditor, district attorneys and state legislative seats. The nine statewide ballot questions, including measures on public records, marijuana and firearms, will not appear until the Nov. 3 general election.
In the 4th Congressional District, which includes Needham, incumbent Democratic Rep. Jake Auchincloss faces progressive challenger Jason Poulos of Sherborn. Republican Thomas Stalcup is also running.
How to vote early or absentee
Miller said any voter who cannot make it to the polls on Sept. 1 may vote absentee in person at the Town Clerk's office during business hours. The deadline for in-person absentee voting is noon on Monday, Aug. 31.
For vote-by-mail, applications must reach the clerk's office by 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25. Miller's office is already mailing ballots in the order requests were received. Completed mail-in ballots must arrive at the local election office or an official drop box by 8 p.m. on Election Day. There is no grace period for postmarks, according to WBUR's voter guide.
The statewide early in-person voting window runs Saturday, Aug. 22 through Friday, Aug. 28. Needham's Town Hall is a voting location, though specific daily hours were not listed in the clerk's published guidance. Contact the Town Clerk's office for the schedule.
Dedham early voting
Dedham residents can also vote early in person at Dedham Town Hall. The posted schedule includes Saturday, Aug. 22 (9 a.m.–3 p.m.), Monday, Aug. 24 (8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.) and Tuesday, Aug. 25 (8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.), with additional days through the week. Voters should confirm the full schedule with the Dedham Town Clerk.
College students: check your address
Miller advised college students who requested a mail ballot to confirm they will be at their college address when it arrives. If not, they should request the ballot be sent to their Needham home address or vote absentee in person at the Town Clerk's office before leaving.
Party rules and Election Day
Massachusetts runs a semi-closed primary. Registered Democrats and Republicans vote in their own party's contest. Unenrolled voters may choose either ballot without changing their enrollment status.
Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 1. Most voters do not need to show ID. First-time voters may be asked for a driver's license, utility bill or lease copy. Voters can look up their polling place at sec.state.ma.us/WhereDoIVoteMA.
The registration deadline is firm: 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22.
