Needham's Select Board got its first look Tuesday at "The Accidental Artist," a proposed public mural installation pitched by Deputy Town Manager David Davison and Director of Economic Development John Sisson at the board's Aug. 11 meeting.

No artist has been named. Details about the mural's location, dimensions and funding have not been made public. The proposal is the first time the project has appeared on a town agenda, and it is distinct from Needham's existing public art efforts, including the "From Needham to the World" mural series at Chapel Street and Great Plain Avenue and a separate NCAC-funded mural at 1299 Highland Ave.

Sisson, who joined Needham's economic development office in early 2026 after economic development roles in Dedham and Newton, told the Needham Observer in March that taking care of existing businesses is "one of the best things you can do for business attraction."

The board also heard an update on Gardeners Nest, the proposed 10-unit condominium project at 193 Garden St. that is moving through the state's Local Initiative Program. As we reported Aug. 7, Michael and Robert Tedoldi's Fuller Brook Ltd. wants to build five duplex buildings with four-bedroom units on the 30,000-square-foot lot near the corner of May Street. Three of the 10 units would be affordable at 80% of area median income.

The LIP pathway is a "friendly" version of Chapter 40B that requires a formal letter of support from Town Manager Katie King, coordinated with the Select Board, before the project can proceed to the Zoning Board of Appeals for final approval. Needham already exceeds the state's 10% affordable housing threshold with 1,404 subsidized units (11.85%), giving the town full discretion to reject 40B applications. The cooperative LIP route is a strategic choice by the developer.

Select Board Vice Chair Cathy Dowd said at the board's March 10 meeting, when the proposal was first presented, "We really need different types of housing. We have a lot of one type, but we're looking for different types. I think this fits in Needham."

Wetlands consultant Mary Trudeau was listed among the presenters for the Aug. 11 agenda item, indicating environmental review remains part of the process. No formal vote or direction on either the mural or the housing project was confirmed from the Needham Channel's coverage of the meeting.

The Gardeners Nest project's next stop is the Zoning Board of Appeals. No hearing date for "The Accidental Artist" mural has been announced.
